Christina Bohannan wants Iowans to believe she respects law enforcement. Her record says she’d rather defund it.
While serving in the Iowa House, Bohannan had a chance to stand up for the men and women who patrol Iowa’s streets. She voted no instead.
The Vote: In 2021, the Iowa House passed SF 342 56-35, legislation that let eligible full-time officers keep their group health insurance after a promotion and carry that coverage into retirement. Section 23 protected exactly the kind of negotiated benefits that keep experienced officers on the job instead of walking out the door for better coverage elsewhere. Bohannan voted no.
Not “voted present.” Not “had reservations.” No.
This Isn’t a One-Off
Bohannan’s coolness toward cops didn’t start or end with a floor vote. As DEI Chair at the University of Iowa Law School, she promoted donations to organizations pushing to defund, dismantle, and abolish police departments outright. She called Iowa’s Back the Blue law — legislation designed to protect officers — “dangerous and disturbing.” And she’s repeatedly aligned herself with far-left activists working to weaken law enforcement, all while hoping voters won’t notice the gap between her rhetoric and her record.
Bottom Line
Christina Bohannan had a real, concrete opportunity to protect the health insurance of the officers who run toward danger so the rest of us don’t have to. She said no. That’s not a messaging problem for her campaign to manage — it’s a paper trail Iowa law enforcement can read for themselves.
