The top national political handicapper, the Cook Political Report, now rates the Iowa Governor’s Race as a “Solid Republican” hold. Cook’s “Solid R Rating” reflects the strong position of Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds while noting a terrible political environment for Iowa Democrats.

“But as of now, there have been no major primary challengers lining up against her, and no major Democrat who’s come forward to throw their hat in the ring after Rep. Cindy Axne decided to run for re-election to the House instead,” Cook Political Report says in their analysis.

The Des Moines Register poll shows Governor Reynolds is over 50%, which matches some internal polling conducted on both sides of the political spectrum.

The individuals that have announced on the Democratic side to take on the Governor have been seen by many to be unremarkable. Political insiders believe that the Iowa Democratic Party’s failure to recruit a strong candidate to take on Governor Reynolds is due not only to a dearth of political talent but also a near-total lack of party leadership.
