Steve Kruse, a farmer, similarly discussed his nitrogen costs skyrocketing 50 percent. “They have it on hand, so that’s good,” Kruse said, referring to his nitrogen supplier. “But to get that price, I had to pay everything in January.”

Another farmer on the panel, David Muth, described having a different experience with supply chain gridlock.

“During harvest, it wasn’t uncommon sometimes [for a] two, three-hour drive one-way to get something because it wasn’t available locally, or you waited two or three days to get it shipped it to you,” Muth said. “We had anhydrous booked for fall application at a reasonable price and the supplier covered about 50 percent of what we had booked, ran out, and said ‘sorry’.”

National School Choice Week: Parents and Students Deserve The Right To Decide What’s Best

Iowa is fortunate to have Governor Reynolds as a vocal supporter of school choice.  As part of her 2021 education legislation, she proposed the creation of ESAs that would have been available to a certain segment of Iowa students.  In the interim she became the first governor in the country to sign the Education Freedom Pledge which promotes, among other items, a parent’s right to use taxpayer-funded education dollars on the schooling of their choice.  And in her Condition of the State address to kick off 2022’s legislative session, Governor Reynolds outlined a proposal for an even broader ESA program than what she proposed last year.
