This past week, as we recognized Armed Forces Day, I found myself reflecting on what military service has meant to my family and to our country.
Growing up in a military family, much of my childhood was spent on military bases and posts surrounded by men and women dedicated to serving something greater than themselves. Later, when I joined the Army, I gained an even deeper appreciation for the sacrifice, discipline, and commitment that military service demands.
Military service has always been deeply personal to our family. As a 24-year Army veteran married to a 30-year Army veteran, we understand the pride that comes with wearing the uniform, but also the burdens carried by those who serve and by the families who serve alongside them.
For generations, America’s Armed Forces have stood as the guardians of freedom around the world. Every service member who raises their right hand answers a calling rooted in duty, sacrifice, and love of country. Their willingness to serve deserves far more than a single day of recognition. It deserves our enduring gratitude and unwavering support.
I have seen firsthand the character of the American service member. They come from every corner of this country, including towns and communities right here in Iowa, united by a common mission to defend our nation and protect the freedoms we cherish. They do not seek praise or attention. They simply answer the call.
That is why supporting our troops, veterans, and military families must remain a national priority. We owe our service members more than words. We owe them strong support systems, quality health care, mental health resources, safe housing, and a government that keeps its promises to those who served.

America remains the greatest nation in the world because generations of brave men and women have been willing to defend it. Their courage, sacrifice, and patriotism continue to inspire all of us.
To every man and woman who has worn the uniform, and to every military family who has served alongside them, thank you. Our nation is forever grateful for your service and sacrifice. God bless our troops and the United States of America.
